Books and Blocks

At Books and Blocks, we’ve discovered that early learners approach thinking and problem-solving in many different ways.

Some builders focus on creativity and colour, while others use engineering techniques and technical language to explain their designs.

During our last session, we concentrated on building stable towers, making sure to include plenty of “support beams” to keep them standing strong.

The ingenuity and imagination of our early learners continues to amaze us!

Books and Blocks will return next month, with children aged zero-to-six welcome to join the fun.

Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club

The library added so many exciting new junior fiction books to our collection last week, and they became the inspiration for our latest Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club session!

Our builders created amazing designs inspired by Captain Underpants: The Manga, Minecraft: The Manga, A Little Bit Lola: Too Messy to Be a Princess, A Little Bit Lola: Too Scared to Be a Knight, new junior non-fiction books about cricket stars, and even a magical pet store.

These stories were not only fun to recreate in bricks - they’re also available to borrow!

Come into the library to see the creations on display and explore the new collection.

Tech Club

Tech Club took a break from filmmaking at their last session to enjoy some gaming fun.

The GIL Library Hub recently received new gaming equipment from Warren Library, and the Tech Club members were the perfect group to put the new steering wheel to the test while playing Mario Kart.

The steering wheel made the game more accessible for our younger and less experienced players, although - with shells flying and rockets launching across the track - we quickly discovered that Mario Kart is never an easy game to master! Tech Club will return to filmmaking activities next session.

Upcoming early learning activities

Wiggles and Giggles is an exciting new program for children under six, and is beginning this week at the GIL Library Hub.

Join us for a music and movement program, designed for preschoolers and their caregivers. Kids get to build motor skills, practice listening, and connect with their caregivers, all the while having an absolute blast at the library!

Stories, songs, and rhymes play a vital role in the development of our babies and toddlers, and the Library warmly welcomes them and their carers to Rhyme Time next week to enjoy the richness of language together.

Join us to sing nursery rhymes, listen to simple stories, and explore specialised occupational therapy toys designed to support growing minds. Babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups are all welcome to come along and join the fun.

Join us every week for Little STEAM at the library, where preschoolers and their families can explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through hands-on play and discovery!

Each session features fun activities, stories, experiments, and creative projects designed especially for young learners. Come build, create, explore, and imagine together in a welcoming space full of curiosity and fun!

Tech Savvy Seniors

At Tech Savvy Seniors last week, participants learned about emails and attachments. This week, they will be learning about navigating the internet.

Tech Savvy Seniors is free, fun and friendly small group tech training, made possible thanks to funding from Telstra, the NSW government and the State Library of NSW.

If you would like some help with using smartphones or tablets, this program is made for you.
