Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club

Happy Chinese New Year! Our Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club builders celebrated the Year of the Horse and Chinese New Year by creating Chinese lanterns, dragons, temples, fans and scenes with horses with them.

We have added our creations to the library’s front window with our display on China to help add to the festive vibe!

Tech Club

We can make our own bling at the Tech Club! Our rings, which we designed last week, were ready for printing.

Tech Club designers watched as the printer created the pieces that they had designed through their own ingenuity, and were able to take home the finished product. We think they look great! Next week we will be moving onto making buttons.

Little STEAM

Last session of Little STEAM focused on the topic of measurement, with the little scientists discovering all the ways we can measure the world around us.

The book ‘Measuring me!’ by Nicola Kent introduced us to the concept of informal measuring and we used chopsticks and tin cans to measure ourselves before using formal measuring items like a tape measure.

We also explored the concept of measuring weight, and used a see-saw to find out what was heavier or lighter.

A thermometer inside versus outside helped us to measure the temperature, and a stopwatch helped us to measure speed and time! We also had a craft session and created a balanced hanging mobile. What a great session of learning; we can’t wait to do it again this week!

Books and Blocks

Guided free play can have a great impact on our children’s imaginations! We enjoyed creating, building and imagining at Books and Blocks last week with many intrepid minds joining us.

We read ‘Not a box’ by Antoinette Portis which helped us realise that a box can be anything if we use our imagination, and, using our imaginations we turned the blocks into walls for Humpty Dumpy, race tracks for cars, ice creams for dinosaurs and hospitals for those dinosaurs who ate too much ice cream.

We built schools for our puppets and read stories to them, sang songs about building and learned lessons about gravity and balance. Books and Blocks will be returning next month for more creative play.

Friday Puzzles and Games

Join us this week for a relaxing morning of playing board games, cards and solving puzzles with other like-minded gaming enthusiasts.

Visit one of Gilgandra’s café’s beforehand to bring along your own cup of coffee and morning tea.

Tech Savvy Seniors starts this week

A new season of Tech Savvy Seniors is starting this week. Tech Savvy Seniors is free, fun and friendly small group tech training, made possible thanks to funding from Telstra, the NSW Government and the State Library of NSW.

If you would like some help with using smartphones or tablets, this program is made for you.
