What was happening in Sport in January 2016

2016 Australia Day Awards – Luke Gale is named as the Gilgandra 2016 Sports Award winner at the Australia Day ceremony. Luke’s achievements in rugby league the previous year included representing Group 14 and the Western Rams Under 16s, captaining the Far West Academy of Sports Under 16 team and being selected in the NSW Under 16 Young Achievers squad that toured Papua New Guinea.
Other nominees for the Sports Award were Marita Basham for her achievements in dragon boat racing which included representing NSW at the Australian Championships in Perth. She was also named as the Western Region 2015 Paddler of The Year.
Zac Mills was also nominated for his outstanding efforts in rugby league, basketball and athletics.
Meg Morris was inducted into the Gilgandra Sporting Roll of Honour for her achievements in athletics and cross country which were highlighted by winning a gold medal at the NSW Combined High School Championships and then representing NSW at the Australian All Schools Championship.
Racing – Owned by Megan O’Connor, Bill Welsh and Adam and Robyn Hazelton, five-year-old gelding Yes Zariz salutes at Bathurst paying $7.30 for the win on the TAB. Yes Zariz was trained by Bruce Parker.
