Lock it or lose it!
Local police have one clear message: LOCK IT OR LOSE IT.
It can be difficult to get out of an old habit of not locking up your house or car, thinking ‘it’ll be right’. But police are urging locals to stay vigilant, and make sure you are protecting yourselves and your belongings.
For tradies, this may mean an extra few steps to ensure your tools are protected too.
“Thieves are opportunistic and know that many tradespeople have expensive tools and equipment,” NSW police have said. “Don’t let fools steal your tools.”
Following these simple rules will help keep you and your belongings safe.
• Don’t leave expensive tools and equipment in your vehicle or at worksites overnight.
• Keep your vehicle doors, windows, and storage areas locked, even when working on site.
• Invest in a lockable storage box.
• Don’t leave anything of value visible inside your vehicle.
• Don’t hide spare keys inside or underneath your vehicle.
• Remove any documents from your vehicle which reveal where you live.
• Engrave or mark your tools with your driver’s licence number.
• Photograph and record details of expensive tools or equipment.
With the rise in keyless cars, vehicle theft is becoming increasingly easier with owners choosing to leave (or forgetting they have left) their ‘keyless’ key in the car. This leaves the car a very easy target for thieves something nobody wants.
As we all know, if a thief wants to break into your house or car - they are going to do the very best they can to get in.
If there’s a will, there’s a way. But by making sure your belongings are out of sight, you have kept your doors and windows locked, and the key remains with you, you are minimising the risk of theft.
The message remains simple: LOCK IT OR LOSE IT.
