Weather impacts social bowls, but not social life

There weren’t any starters for social bowls last Wednesday, May 27 due to the lovely rainy day.

Sunday social bowls wasn’t the best day either but six hardy bowlers still turned up for a game.

After eight ends the bowlers had, what was shown on their score card, as being an interval.

They didn’t return after the interval as a good shower of rain convinced them to seek shelter in the club and not return as it got a bit too cold.

Before play was called to a halt Jill Hankins, Bruce Parker and Jayden Doran had a narrow lead over Dave Jones, Lloyd Gwyn and Gil Riley, 7-4.

Fours Championships

On Saturday (May 30) one game of Fours Championships was played and believe it or not, it didn’t rain, but there was still a few ‘Raines’ about who were more than happy to rain on the parade of the their opposition.

The Raines family involving Jo, Garry and Noel claimed a 30-14 victory over David Duffy, Tracey Riley and Danial Riley.

This was an evenly matched game over the first 13 ends when the score was 13-11 in the favour of the Noel Raines-skipped team.

Over the next two ends the Raines’ team scored 11 shots and skipped to a handy 24-11 lead from which they went on with.

Duffy, Tracey and Danial all tried hard until the very end but it just wasn’t their day.

Baden celebrates his 70th birthday in style

With not much happening outside the club due to wet weather during the week, the inside was nice and dry (weather wise) for the celebration of one of our regular bowlers, Baden Fishers’ 70th birthday party on Saturday afternoon, May 30.

Baden spent all his life in Mendooran and only moved to the big smoke of Gilgandra, five years ago.

The Gil Sporties having to pay a huge transfer fee for Baden to play bowls with us instead of Mendooran.

Friends and family travelled from around the globe for this special occasion and the highlight of the afternoon for Baden was having four of his school mates, who all graduated from the University of Mendooran, attend the party.

Phillip Burke, Steve Broughton and Paul Reddy all travelled on the same school bus with Baden, along with John Bunner who was in Baden’s class but travelled on a different bus.

Baden didn’t give too much away with any school days stories other than to say that Paul Reddy was the smartest and Baden himself was the best looking.

All the best to Baden from the bowlers and members of the club.
