Local students were invited to join in on an afterschool community workshop at the Gilgandra Youth Centre, where Netwaste environmental learning advisor Bill Tink showed how to turn common household waste into works of art. The makers session was a huge success, with dozens of kids showing up for the event and afternoon tea.

Waste2Art is a yearly art exhibition and competition for schools, community groups, and individuals who live in the NetWaste region. Each year, a theme is set as a challenge to entrants to get creative with their waste and recycle it into something interesting.

This year, the theme is ‘toys’. The challenge gives entrants an opportunity to look at waste differently, to challenge their perceptions of household rubbish through creativity.

Brought along to the community session was cardboard, plastic bags, old electronics, and lots more domestic waste. Kids were free to choose what they used in their entries, and could work individually or in groups.

Adults were there to help the kid when needed, especially when using the hot glue guns or cutting pieces of wire.

A local exhibition will be held by Gilgandra Shire Council in May later this year, before the best entries are sent to Dubbo as part of the competition.

Successful pieces there will move further on to Cobar, with prize money available for the best of the best in NSW.
